The second race of the Stortford Tri Midweek Aquathlon Series 2016 took place in Mediterranean temperatures on Tuesday 19th July.
Thirty-nine athletes took to the warm waters, with the vast majority enjoying the chance to try a non-wetsuit race (potentially useful practice for those doing bigger races this weekend). With the addition of a water station on the run (not normally needed for such a short event) there were no drop outs due to heat. Thirty-seven crossed the line in times only a little slower than usual – impressive in the heat and lacking the bouyancy of a wetsuit, though transitions into running shoes would have been quicker.
Stortford Tri led the way home in both the men’s and the women’s categories, with Mark Spiller finishing in 30:58 in his aquathlon debut and Emma Deary winning the women’s category in 34:05. Mark led out of the water and held on through the run despite Jon Kilbride trying to chase him down after coming out of the water 3rd. For Emma, she used her running strength to two ladies who emerged from the water before her. Veteran categories were won by Claire Bloom of RG Active Race Team and Andy Bourne of Tri Sport Epping.
Full results for Race 2 (updated 21 Jul) featuring splits, category positions and rankings in each discipline are now available. (Note – if you raced in a wetsuit and are not listed as such, please be honest and let us know – it was only fair to request it was a level playing field for those following the competition rules.)
Hope to see you all at the next race on Tues Aug 23rd and the finale on Tues Sept 13th. Do spread the word and invite your friends. Remember also that we are happy to take relay entries.
